The bait system works by placing wood in special traps round your home. These are designed to attract the termites. They are then checked periodically; usually every 3 or 4 months.
Of course the bait is more attractive to the termites than the wood of your home.
This can be used simply to advise if you have termites in the area or your home. However, you can also use treated bait systems.
In this case the bait is treated with a poison that the worker termites take back to the colony. Depending on the type of poison it will either make it impossible for the termites to eat or it will simply kill them.
Either way it is an effective way of destroying a colony.
However, the downside of this system is that there is no guarantee that the termites will go to the bait box; if they are already established they may be happy to continue eating the wood where they are; destroying your home in the process.
The alternative is to use a liquid which is spread round the outside of your home; creating a barrier. Any termite that crosses this liquid line will be killed.
This method is effective and has been used for years but it will not help if you already have an infestation. The worker termites will be killed but the main colony will not be touched.
There is also an issue in that you have to drill holes round your foundations to put the liquid in place.
In addition the liquid will slowly wear out over time; reducing your defense to nothing.
