Camp MacJannet began in 1925 as a summer camp for American and French children on the shores of Lake Annecy. It was styled after American sleep away camps, never seen before in Europe. American families touring Europe would drop their young ones off at Camp MacJannet while they continued on their vacation. During the war the camp dissolved and was turned over to the Quakers for safe keeping and used as a refugee camp. In 1946 the camp reopened and brought together again young French and Americans (many of them war orphans).
