5 Easy and Effective Tile and Grout Cleaning Tips

No matter how big or small your bathroom is, one thing that you have is tile and grout. And if you don’t make sure to clean it on a consistent basis, it can lead to things like soap scum, hard water stains or even mild and mildew. If that happens, the very place where you go to get clean could end up being the room that leads to sneezing, coughing and respiratory problems.

Easy and Effective TileThe good news is that there are simple things that you can do to keep your tile and grout clean. If you’d like a few tips on how you can do this yourself, we have provided you with five of them below:

Use the right brush. Before even getting started, it’s important that you have the right tool. When it comes to cleaning your tile and grout, that would be a brush. Just make sure that you avoid using a metal brush because that could end up scratching your surfaces. Instead, look for a nylon brush or use an old toothbrush instead.

Wet tiles with water first. Sometimes hard water stains and lime can be hard to remove. That’s why it’s a good idea to thoroughly saturate your tile and grout with warm water first. This should loosen up any debris. If some of it does fall to the ground, try and vacuum it up as soon as possible. This will help to prevent you from creating a mess during the cleaning process.

Be careful about the products that you use. Although there are a lot of cleaning products that you can use to clean your tile and grout, the reality is that some of them could actually end up doing more harm than good. For instance, applying chlorine bleach to colored tile could lead to discoloration while using household cleaners on granite or nature stone tiles could damage them. In fact, in order to keep you safe from the chemicals and toxins that tend to come with many of the commercialized cleaning products, we recommend making a homemade tile and grout solution. This brings us to the next point.

Use a household cleaning solution. If you wanted to get your carpets professionally cleaned, you would probably hire a company like Simply Steaming to do the job. But if you want to clean your tile and grout, the good news is that you don’t have to pay a cleaning company. You can make a cleaning solution yourself. Some of our favorites include mixing one part water with one part hydrogen peroxide into a spray bottle and spraying it directly onto the tile and grout. Or, you can mix two parts vinegar with two part water and spray it onto the tile and grout. Finally, you can create a paste out of baking soda and water. Whichever solution you choose, just make sure you let it soak on your surfaces for 15 minutes and then wipe off with wet rag.

Apply a grout sealer twice a year. There’s one more thing that you should do in order to keep your tile and grout clean. Once a year, it’s a good idea to apply a grout sealer. That will keep your grout from breaking down in between cleanings. For information on grout sealers, visit Groutshields, Floor Supplies or Ace Hardware.
