Watch it : Nat’l Films of Canada, 3 Shorts
May 12, 2010
1960s, 1970s, Artists, Movies, Sport, The North, The West
I have taken a nose dive into the National Film Board of Canada archives.
What an incredible offer; view thousands of films free of charge. Unsure where
to start I selected from the drop down menu 1960s–1970s, my favorite decade
for Canada film apparently. via Toys&Techniques who thankfully led me to this
trove of moving wonders. note : click on image for link to film

I Don’t Have to Work Big (1973) directed by Michael McKennirey
A short documentary about sculptor Joe Fafard. Joe loves cows, has been milking them his whole life. He lives in small town, Pense, Saskatchewan. Joe sculpts a miniature replica of each person & cow in the community.
No Way They Want to Slow Down (1976) directed by Giles Walker. The Canadian ski team travels to Chile and Argentina for summer trainning. So young! So fashionable. Color film soaks in the white snow, blue skies, mirrored sunglasses & spandex bodies. Whooosh! this one was recommended by Toys & Techniques
Ladies and Gentleman…Mr. Leonard Cohen (1965) directed by Donald Brittain & Don Owen. I am no huge Leonard Cohen fan but now will consider becoming one. This documentary was made before his famous musician days, filmed upon his returning to Montréal for a visit. He’s a well respected poet. He lives in Greece. He goes to bistros & hosts small parties with close friends. Such a like-able, relaxed, I-Ching readin’ guy!

yhbhs, thanks for the link. I have heard of BOC but never listened. I will now. Especially since I’ve been noticing the haunting sounds of 70s film music. & I like it!! TOTAL CREEPS!
Nice choices! Isn’t it an awesome archive? I could spend hours in there. Did you see the other skiing movie about the devout xian skier who competes to carry out His will? It’s called “The Sword of the Lord” (no joke!) http://www.nfb.ca/film/sword-of-the-lord/
The NFB!! A Canadian institution! Grew up with those short films, sometimes they would show them on the CBC tv channel (like BBC but the Canadian version)…lots of beautiful animation and funny stop-motion stuff I remember.
And for real you don’t love Leonard?? Oh no! Please reconsider!

@Bree, No I love Leonard! I mean, I am just not a fanatical fan. Though some people have asked me about my tattoo – if it’s a ‘Leonard Cohen tattoo’ the image is on the back of his album..http://www.flickr.com/photos/epiclecticsback/3709487770/ which I had no clue at the time I got it. I found it in a Mexican art calendar. Now I might just say it is a Leonard Cohen tattoo.
@Ben, I am going to watch Sword soon! Thx again for your tips!
You used to be able to order film reels (real prints) from the NFB. Living in a small town with no theater we would order them and show them at the local coffee shop. We would order films from the catalogue based on description and this was a film that was ordered from a brief description, I couldn’t pick my jaw off the ground when it played.

Isn’t Canada awesome?
Wait till you see it IRL.
You’ll make a hell of an expat.
The Big Snit is my favourite NFB animated short.
