All day, over and over I’ve been watching this clip from the video ‘Painter’ by Paul McCarthy (1995) but can’t seem to bring myself to watch the entire 50 minutes. I am so caught up in this character, he’s mesmerizing and intense. Maybe that’s why I can’t handle the full length video. discovered via Art 21

— Immediately I thought of the Zach Galifianakis Absolute Vodka ads.

  1. Paul McCarthy really freaks me out – but I guess that is the point? The main squeeze loves him though, of course. Gender divide?? I can never work it out.

He’s a total freak! I loved his twirling loud wooden rooms at Whitney last year. I had no idea he made weirdo videos til yesterday. He is very manly in his art. Scary, big, looming and gross! No offensive, mr. men.

he has made LOTS AND LOTS of weirdo videos. there is one from the 70s where his friend Karen is gets covered slowly in ketchup. it is horrifying.
