I found these bold, bright women through the Library of Congress’s Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorskii Collection. A brilliant collection of textiles, patterns and landscapes are vividly representing through these wonderful women of the Russain Empire. And I love the transparent rainbow overlays on the photographs borders, makes it all even better.

The Sergei Mikhailovich Prokudin-Gorskii Collection features color photographic surveys of the vast Russian Empire made between ca. 1905 and 1915. An active photographer and scientist, Prokudin-Gorskii (1863-1944) undertook most of his ambitious color documentary project from 1909 to 1915. The Library of Congress purchased the collection from the photographer’s sons in 1948.

    Wow! It was great to find these photos. I am working on a series of illustrations inspired by Russian textiles and matryoshka dolls (you are welcome to take a look at the first one on my flickr site), and have been researching online. Thanks for posting them.
